GENERAL DOOR ISSUES

The most common problem with a door is that it doesn't open or close quite right-either it binds against the doorjambs, or it doesn't close tightly. Most problems of the latter type have more to do with the door latch and knob than the door itself. Of course, because doors are moving parts, they also can suffer from a variety of other maladies.  Many times the Lock gets the blame for not working when it’s really a door problem.

Wooden hinged doors can warp, particularly in humid climates or in areas where the air’s moisture content varies. Warped doors stick, making them difficult to open and close. In addition to moisture-related problems, doors can suffer from continual use, which may eventually cause them to loosen, bind, or stick. When these problems occur, the latch or lock may not catch as well as it should. Correcting these problems is usually fairly simple, but a door that's badly warped will need to be replaced.  Here are some common symptoms to some problems that can be easily fixed:

Does your door bind, sag or drag?

Do your Hinges Squeak?

Does your Door Rattle or is it Damaged?

Fixing a Loose, Warped or Binding Door

LOCK & LATCH ISSUES

The chances are good that, if you're having trouble with a door lock, it's only going to get worse unless you remedy the problem. Most lock troubles are caused by parts that have become worn or out of alignment over time. Some problems are easy to fix. For others, you're better off disassembling the lock and taking the faulty part to a locksmith.

TIP: Keeping moving parts clean and well lubricated will prevent most lockset problems. Others can be prevented by correcting any warped or sagging doors promptly.
